Botswana : BOTSWANA requested bids from IPPs to include 600 MW of power generation capacity
ABW - 09 May, 2013
The Government of Botswana has released a request meant for the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and has asked them to tender expressions of interest for the development of new power production capacities in the nation. The country has charted strategy to include another 600 MW into its ability to make electricity. Of which, 50% will be produced via inclusion of two more units into the 600 MW Morupule B power plant. This four-unit 600 MW project is yet to be finished. The site of the remaining 300 MW, an open ended greenfields development, is still to be decided. Despite the country s affluence in terms of coal resources, it seems Botswana s decision is deliberate and it is likely that the other energy sources will feed the greenfields 300 MW baseload power plant. The Government of Botswana has stated that the awarding of the two 300 MW tenders will be based on a number of aspects like technical and financial capacity, knowledge about similar work and qualification of key workforce as well as planned capital and operating costs.
